Nondeviant reasoning

I’ve been studying Ralph Wedgwood’s excellent paper “The Normative Force of Reasoning” (Nous 40:4 (2006), 660 – 686). Ralph presents and defends a causal theory of reasoning, and one main task is to explain causal nondeviance. I’m very sympathetic to his basic proposal. But I have doubts about one necessary condition he proposes, namely: “the causal chain in question must consist purely of manifestations of the reasoner’s dispositions” (p. 665, bold emphasis added). Philosopher’s Annual Suggestions (again)

I join Jon in his request for suggestions of papers that came out in 2008 for the The Philosopher’s Annual. (I am also a nominator.) We realize we’ll get mostly suggestions for papers about epistemology here. That’s fine. I, for one, am really only interested in suggestions of papers in areas I know pretty well, anyway: I hope great papers in other areas are nominated, too, but it’s other nominators’ jobs to put those forward. My job, as I see it, is to put forward three papers that I’m very confident are worthy of serious consideration, and, for the most part, I can only be very confident about papers in areas I know. If anyone has suggestions, please put them in the comments to Jon’s post, so we can keep them together. (I’ll turn off the comments to this post.) And thanks to those who have already commented there.

New Philosophical Gourmet Report Out

Here. Lots of interesting details to note about who is moving up and who is moving down. Two things on the positive side from my perspective to note: (i) Northwestern moves up significantly, and if they succeed in hiring at the senior level this year, they will be underrated by this report; and (ii) my friends at Missouri continue their upward momentum, in spite of budget woes there as elsewhere.

Warm temperatures in Chicago for APA; meterologists flummoxed

This just in, from the AP (Associated Philosophers) news:

Weather in Chicago for the upcoming APA this Wed. through Saturday (Feb. 18-21) is expected to be unseasonably warm. When asked to comment, local meteorologists were at a loss for an explanation. “Some of us have developed an hypothesis we call the KVANVIG EFFECT,” said one. “We figure it is yet another occasion when Jon Kvanvig made a doom-and-gloom prediction that failed to materialize. To date this effect had been previously acknowledged only in the domains of philosophy of religion and epistemology, where it is pervasive, but with Jon getting into meteorology, we think it is a reasonable hypothesis that the effect explains the warming patterns.” Professor Kvanvig was not immediately available for comment.

Do our intuitions about cases favor IRI? Contrastivism?

Since experimental epistemology has been getting some very useful attention lately on this blog, I thought I’d post an interesting paper by Josh May, Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Jay Hull, and Aaron Zimmerman. The paper reports some findings that will need to be explained away both by philosophers who think that our intuitions about cases favor interest-relative invariantism, and also by philosophers who think that our intuitions about cases favor contrastivism.
