I’ve been studying Ralph Wedgwood’s excellent paper “The Normative Force of Reasoning” (Nous 40:4 (2006), 660 – 686). Ralph presents and defends a causal theory of reasoning, and one main task is to explain causal nondeviance. I’m very sympathetic to his basic proposal. But I have doubts about one necessary condition he proposes, namely: “the causal chain in question must consist purely of manifestations of the reasoner’s dispositions” (p. 665, bold emphasis added).
